OSAKA, Japan - Kosuke Matsubara holds up rugby ball-shaped squashes at his field in Higashiosaka, Osaka Prefecture. Matsubara started to cultivate the vegetables about 10 years ago as a way to help advertise his hometown, where the annual national high school rugby championship tournament is held. AKITA, Japan - Yukako Fukushima of Japan prepares to lift 117.5 kilograms in the benchpress in the women's lightweight powerlifting at the sixth World Games at Akita City Culture Hall on Aug. 20. World champion Raija Koskinen of Finland won the gold medal, followed by Chen Kuan-ting of Taiwan with the silver, while Fukushima took bronze.

Brazilian woman nabbed for marijuana smuggling attempt

NARITA, Japan - The customs office at Narita airport in Chiba Prefecture on Aug. 8 shows to the press 22.3 kilograms of marijuana which 22-year-old woman Keila Kakoi is suspected of trying to smuggle into Japan hidden in a carry-on bag. Kaoko, a resident of Kani, Gifu Prefecture, was arrested on July 20 when she arrived at the airport from Brazil. The drug haul is the largest found in a single piece of carry-on luggage at Narita since the airport's opening in 1978.
