TOKYO, Japan - Olympus Medical Systems Corp. said Oct. 13 it will launch a capsule endoscope (ih handout photo) for the small bowel on Oct. 24 in 33 European countries including Britain, France and Germany. The capsule, measuring 11 millimeters in diameter and 26 mm in length, will be swallowed to transmit two images per second to a recorder unit via a built-in antenna until it is expelled through the anus, the medical systems unit of Japanese camera maker Olympus Corp. said.

The video scope will have a tube tip diameter of 3.2 millimeters, 0.7 mm thinner than the existing thinnest model the company sells, enabling doctors to easily view a child's external ear canal and drum membrane.
