Victims of pumpkin bombs commemorated in Osaka

OSAKA, Japan - Children pray for the victims of "pumpkin bombs," conventional bombs almost the same weight and shape of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, in front of a monument in Osaka on July 26, 2014, after a memorial service. A total of 49 such bombs are believed to have been dropped in Japan between July and August 1945 during World War II.

A group of junior high school students offers prayers in front of a monument in Osaka, western Japan, on July 26, 2015, in memory of victims of U.S. "Pumpkin bombs," which resembled the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki but which carried conventional explosives. Such bombs were dropped across Japan mainly for testing and training purposes in the last one month before the country's surrender in World War II.
