SYDNEY, Australia - Cathy Freeman, the Olympic women's 400-meter champion who lit the caldron at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, runs with the Olympic torch from the Sydney Opera House. She is the first runner in the global torch relay across five continents.

SALT LAKE CITY, United States - The Olympic flag is carried into the Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium on Feb. 8 by eight persons representing the five continents. Japan's gold medalist Kazuyoshi Funaki (2nd from L) represented Asia, joined by Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu (Africa), former astronaut John Glenn (the Americas), former Polish President Lech Walesa (Europe) and Australian athlete Cathy Freeman (Oceania). Also among the flag-bearers were 1968 alpine skiing gold medalist Jean-Claude Killy, movie maker Steven Spielberg and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau to represent the pillars of the Olympic Movement.
