MITO, Japan - Work begins May 27 to dismantle the North Korean cargo ship Chil Song that has been stranded since December off Hitachi in the prefecture. The 3,144-ton ship broke into two parts in March, with fuel remaining in the vessel spilling and reaching preseason Pacific coastal beaches in the eastern Japan prefecture.

HITACHI, Japan - The 3,144-ton North Korean freighter Chil Song, carrying a cargo of tire chips, ran aground on coastal waters in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture and heavy oil was found floating inside Hitachi harbor, the Japan Coast Guard said Dec. 5. The ship notified the coast guard at around 12:10 a.m. the same day that it was adrift.
