Conductor Albrecht dies

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken in December 2001 shows German conductor Gerd Albrecht. Albrecht died Feb. 2, 2014, in Berlin from an illness at the age of 78. He led the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra as principal conductor from 1998 to 2007 after serving as music director of Germany's Hamburg State Opera and chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic.

Japan's refueling ships return home after antiterrorism mission

TOKYO, Japan - The Maritime Self-Defense Force's 13,500-ton supply ship Mashu returns to Marumi Wharf in Tokyo Bay on Feb. 6, 2010, after winding up its refueling mission in the Indian Ocean in support of U.S.-led antiterrorism operations in and around Afghanistan. The 4,550-ton destroyer Ikazuchi, along with the Mashu, also returned home, marking the end of Japan's contribution to the operations since December 2001 in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that year in the United States.

Hitachi recalling 230,000 washer-dryers

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Home & Life Solutions Inc. said Dec. 20 about 238,000 of its washer-dryers have a defect that could cause fire. The company will check and repair these washer-dryers produced between August 2001 and December 2002 free of charge.

Takao Ode, ex-Supreme Court justice, dies at 73

TOKYO, Japan - Takao Ode (file photo), a former justice of the Supreme Court, died of heart failure at his home in Sano, Tochigi Prefecture, on Sept. 29, the Supreme Court said Oct. 2. He was 73. Ode served as a Supreme Court justice from September 1997 to December 2001, when he resigned due to poor health.

Opposition parties urge Moriyama to resign over prison case

TOKYO, Japan - Justice Minister Mayumi Moriyama listens to Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda durikng a session of the House of Representatives Budget Committee on Feb. 19. Four opposition parties agreed earlier in the day to urge Moriyama to resign over what they allege as the ministry's cover-up of the death of a male inmate in December 2001 at Nagoya Prison.

The ship is there with the 657-ton Shintatsu Maru, another salvage ship, to raise an unidentified ship which sank after a shoot-out with the Japan Coast Guard in December 2001.

Historic hotel in Kanazawa left to rot since 1998

KANAZAWA, Japan - File photo taken in December 2001 shows Hakuunro Hotel at the Yuwaku hot spring in the suburbs of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, which has been left to rot, much to the dismay of local residents. Founded in 1937, the hotel was a pioneer resort hotel constructed in a half-Japanese, half-Western style, characteristic of the early Showa Period (1926-1989). It was registered as a cultural property in 1997 but shut down the following year due to bad management.

Japan's jobless rate hits record high 5.6% in Dec.

TOKYO, Japan - Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Chikara Sakaguchi gives a news conference at his ministry Jan. 29 as Japan's unemployment rate climbed to a record high of 5.6% in December in the government's preliminary report. The figure pushed the average jobless rate for 2001 to a record high of 5.0%.

Veteran cartoonist Yokoyama dies at 92

TOKYO, Japan - Veteran cartoonist Ryuichi Yokoyama (in photo taken in December 1998) died Nov. 8, 2001 of a stroke at a hospital in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo. Yokoyama, 92, collapsed at his home in Kamakura on Nov. 7, 2001 and was rushed to the hospital. He received a Persons of Cultural Merits award in 1994 marking the first time a cartoonist received the honor.

Gang rape ringleader given 14-year prison term

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Nov. 2 sentenced Shinichiro Wada (file photo), a former student at Waseda University and organizer of the so-called 'Super Free' event-planning circle, to 14 years in prison on charges of gang raping a female college student in May last year at a party the group hosted with other members as well as another rape in December 2001.
