Gang rape ringleader given 14-year prison term

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Nov. 2 sentenced Shinichiro Wada (file photo), a former student at Waseda University and organizer of the so-called 'Super Free' event-planning circle, to 14 years in prison on charges of gang raping a female college student in May last year at a party the group hosted with other members as well as another rape in December 2001. Jail term for Niigata confinement cut to 11 years

Murderer ordered to pay compensation in installments

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Dec. 4 ordered Mitsuko Yamada (file photo) who murdered a 2-year-old girl to pay the victim's parents 61 million yen in compensation, of which 19.8 million yen is to be paid in installments over 20 years. In November, the Tokyo High Court sentenced Yamada to 15 years in prison for strangling Haruna Wakayama on Nov. 22, 1999, in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward and burying her body in the backyard of Yamada's parents' home in the town of Oigawa, Shizuoka Prefecture. Ex-Red Army Faction member gets 12 yrs for 1970 JAL hijacking

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Feb. 14 sentenced former Red Army Faction member Yoshimi Tanaka (file photo) to a 12-year jail term for his involvement in the 1970 hijacking of a Japan Airlines plane. Tanaka and eight other Red Army Faction members hijacked the Boeing 727 on March 31, 1970, after it left Tokyo bound for Fukuoka, southwestern Japan.

Woman gets 14 years for killing girl over 'snubbing'

Asahara ordered to pay 460 mil. yen over sarin attack

TOKYO, July 25 Kyodo - AUM Shinrikyo religious cult founder Shoko Asahara (file photo) was ordered July 15 by the Tokyo District Court to pay about 460 million yen in compensation to eight family members of four victims of a June 1994 sarin gas attack in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. The plaintiffs filed the 545 million yen damages suit in August 1995, about one year after the attack, but proceedings were suspended for nearly four years because the court decided in December 1996 to closely follow proceedings of criminal lawsuits filed against Asahara, 46.
