CATEGORY: SOCIETY SHOTLIST: various of the farewell event at the Memphis Zoo STORYLINE: The Memphis Zoo in Memphis, the U.S. state of Tennessee, held a farewell event for female giant panda Ya Ya on Saturday. Hundreds of people attended the sendoff at the CHINA exhibit, where they said goodbye to Ya Ya, signed letters, and watched cultural performances. Ya Ya came to the Memphis Zoo in 2003 with male giant panda Le Le under a partnership between the zoo and the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens (CAZG). The Memphis Zoo announced in December 2022 that the giant panda loan agreement with the CAZG will end in 2023. Unfortunately, Le Le died in February ahead of the pair's scheduled return to China. TOKYO, Japan - Lee Kang Young (photo), a South Korean atomic bomb survivor who filed a lawsuit in Japan over unpaid medical allowances, died on July 11 in a hospital in Busan, South Korea. He was 78. Lee, born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, was exposed to radiation in the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, while he was working there as a forced laborer. TOKYO, Japan - Well-known Japanese skiing pioneer Keizo Miura (file photo) died of multiple organ failure on Jan. 5 at a Tokyo hospital, his family said. He was 101. OSAKA, Japan - The Finance Ministry's Mint Bureau in Osaka said Nov. 15 it will accept mail orders from Nov. 22 to Dec. 5 for its first colored silver coins to mark the fifth Winter Asian Games to be held in Aomori Prefecture in February 2003. The 1,000-yen coin made of pure silver features a skier and a skater on the front, and apples and the games' symbol on the back. The apples a major local product of Aomori.
