Hamanomachi street

Abura-machi is viewed from the intersection in Higashihamano-machi (present day Hamanomachi street). The water conduit in the foreground is now underground but flooded over in the great flood of 1982. The building on the corner to the right (site of a modern-day McDonald's outlet) retains the atmosphere of the Meiji Period with its sliding paper doors and wooden walls. Drinking water was supplied from Hongochi Dam to the public well in the foreground. Viewing Tateyama direction from the Old Site of Daitokuji Temple

This photo captures Nagasaki city looking toward Tateyama viewed from the precinct of former Daitokuji Temple. The hill in the background is former Uchi-machi which used to be enclosed by stone walls. The areas with rooftops are present-day Shianbashi, Hamanomachi, and the right bank of the Nakashima River. The roof tiles fixed with mortar stand out. They were thus fixed so they would not be blown away by typhoons.
