This photo captures Nagasaki city looking toward Tateyama viewed from the precinct of former Daitokuji Temple. The hill in the background is former Uchi-machi which used to be enclosed by stone walls. The areas with rooftops are present-day Shianbashi, Hamanomachi, and the right bank of the Nakashima River. The roof tiles fixed with mortar stand out. They were thus fixed so they would not be blown away by typhoons.                 This photo has August 20, 1874 written on it. The foundry with two chimneys and the brick building with the boiler room which had started operation directly under the shogunate government in 1857 survived the typhoon. Another brick building, the lathe workshop with the first iron roof truss in Japan was not destroyed. The western-style building on the hill to the left is the dormitory for foreign staff built in April,1874.                     Hotarujaya and Ichinose-bashi Bridge

                    Ichinose bridge and Hotarujaya. This area, called Ichinose, was famous for its fireflies ( hotaru ) and was counted among the eight best scenes of Nagasaki. Hotarujaya (teahouse) was situated at the entrance to Nagasaki and served as a place to bid farewell to travellers leaving the city. Ichinose Bridge was built through private funding by the Chinese interpreter Chen Dao-Long.
