IZUMO, Japan - The shrine deity, protected with silk cloth, is carried by priests to the main hall at Izumo Taisha in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, on May 10, 2013, in a special ceremony called Honden Senza Sai. The ceremony was held for the first time in 60 years at the Shinto shrine, one of the most important in Japan, after the completion of renovations to the main hall, a national treasure.

A special ceremony, called Honden Senza Sai, was held the same day at the Shinto shrine, one of the most important in Japan, for the first time in 60 years to mark the completion of renovations at the shrine and return its deity to the main hall.

TOKYO, Japan - A wreath (on the right) is one of the two wreaths offered and paid for by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi which were laid Aug. 13 at Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine. The wreaths were laid on the right and left sides of the ''honden'' main sanctuary of the shrine, which enshrines the nation's war dead as well as Class A war criminals. Koizumi's planned visit to the shrine in his official capacity on Aug. 15 has stirred controversy.

On the left is the Kaguraden of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (lower hall of worship). At the top of the stairs is the main shrine of Hachimangu. There are 62 steps in total. The Hachimangu that Yoritomo moved from Tsurugaoka is said to have been located under the staircase, but it was burned in a fire in 1193 and moved to the present higher location in November of the same year. The building on the left is the Kaguraden. This is the hall of worship at Taiyuin, the mausoleum of the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Taiyuin consists of a worship hall, middle room ( ainoma ), and main hall. The worship hall is a 64 tatami-mat space. Pictures of 140 dragons grace the ceiling, reportedly the work of the famous Kano School. The main shrine of Nikko Toshogu is viewed from the west. The inner sanctuary is in the centre. The section one level lower is called Ishinoma. The building on the left seems to the Rinzo (sutra repository), which was later demolished. Since there is no tablet visible on the Romon gate and the square foundation stones are placed next to the Kaguraden, this photograph is thought to have been taken around 1870 when the temple buildings were demolished. The hall of worship in the shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Iemitsu. Dragons are portrayed in each section in the ceiling and in the centre is the canopy donated by his younger sister, the Marquise of Maeda. To the right and left of the altar, a guardian dog and a Chinese-style figure of a lion are drawn. On the right is a drawing by Kano Tanyu. Rokkaku-do (Hexagonal Building) is visible beyond the Romon (Cherry Gate). The bronze and stone lanterns visible in front of the gate were removed along with Rokkaku-do at the beginning of the Meiji Period. The same photograph, credited to F.
