Chinese court sentences Uyghur scholar to life in prison

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken in June 2010 shows Uyghur scholar Ilham Tohti. On Sept. 23, 2014, the Urumqi People's Intermediate Court in the western China region of Xinjiang sentenced Tohti to life in prison for separatism, an unusually severe conclusion to a case that has drawn condemnation from around the world. The sentence, which includes the seizure of all of Tohti's assets, is the harshest punishment handed down to a Chinese activist in the recent past.
