New dinosaur species

FUKUI, Japan - Fossils of a new dinosaur species, named Fukuititan nipponensis, are placed at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture. The museum announced June 8, 2010, the fossils unearthed since 2007 from a Lower Cretaceous Period (about 120 million years ago) layer in Katsuyama are of a new sauropod species of about 10 meters long.

Going once, going twice: your very own pagoda

NAGOYA, Japan - This five-story pagoda located at Sedaiji temple in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, will be auctioned off to pay tax arrears owed by the temple's owners -- the now-defunct real estate company Sogo Fudosan and its corporate parent Sogo Taxi. The city of Katsuyama seized the 75-meter-high pagoda and other properties of the temple as liens on overdue property and local corporate taxes. Interested bidders must pay the city a deposit of 350 million yen by Nov. 27. Results of the auction will be announced two days later. Kiyoshi Tada, once known as the ''taxicab king of Kansai,'' built Sedaiji in 1987 as a tourist attraction in his native Katsuyama.

Fossil thigh of herbivorous dinosaur found in Fukui

FUKUI, Japan - The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum announced Oct. 29 that fossils of what appear to be a thigh bone (photo) and other remains of a huge herbivorous dinosaur have been unearthed at the Kitadani quarry in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, where dinosaur fossils have been found in the past. Dinosaur foreleg fossil found in Fukui, largest class in Japan

FUKUI, Japan - A fossil of a foreleg believed to belong to a large plant-eating dinosaur was excavated in a stratum from the Cretaceous period in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum said July 11. The fossil is one of the largest foreleg fossils ever discovered in Japan, with its length estimated at about 90 centimeters and width about 25 cm, according to the museum. However, the date is later than photograph #4799 by Usui Shuzaburo because the cherry trees have grown.
