TOKYO, Japan - A pristine beach on Ogasawara islands, one of the five cultural and natural sites short-listed by Japan on Jan. 29 for designation as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Ogasawara are home to around 500 indigenous flora and fauna. The other four sites are Mt. Fuji, Nagasaki churches and other Christian assets, Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma, a symbol of Japan's industrial modernization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and historic ruins in Asuka village in Nara, a site known for colorful murals in the Takamatsuzuka and Kitora tombs.

The Kitora tomb is thought to be the burial place of someone related to the seventh century Emperor Temmu. Researchers investigating the tomb, which dates from the late seventh to early eighth centuries, said the paintings in the stone chamber remain intact in comparison with their condition after a probe in 2001.
