Murals from ancient tomb

KASHIHARA, Japan - Children look at a mural depicting the Suzaku (red phoenix) removed from the ancient Kitora tomb in an exhibition open to the local people in the village of Asuka, Nara Prefecture, on May 14, 2010. KASHIHARA, Japan - The photo released by the Culture Agency shows the floor of a stone chamber at the site of the ancient Kirora tomb in Asuka, Nara Prefecture, where human bones and teeth as well as metal believed to be from a burial casket have been found. The Kitora tomb is thought to be the burial place of someone related to the seventh century Emperor Temmu. The National Research Institute for Cultural Properties said June 18 that the latest findings from its excavations are expected to provide clues to the person's identity. (Kyodo)

Researchers investigating the tomb, which dates from the late seventh to early eighth centuries, said the paintings in the stone chamber remain intact in comparison with their condition after a probe in 2001.
