Japan's Iraqi reconstruction aid mission ends with ceremony

KOMAKI, Japan - About 450 members of the Air Self-Defense Force return home to an ASDF base in Komaki, Aichi Prefecture, from Kuwait on Feb. 15 after Japan formally ended its five-year reconstruction aid operations in Iraq. The ASDF members had carried out withdrawal-related tasks at a Kuwaiti base from early December after Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada issued an order in late November for the return to Japan of a contingent of airmen who had airlifted goods and personnel for multinational forces and the United Nations to and from Iraq.

KOMAKI, Japan - An Air Self-Defense Force C-130 transport aircraft is parked at the ASDF Komaki Base in Aichi Prefecture for media review. In Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda announced Oct. 4 that Japan will send the aircraft to Pakistan on Oct. 5 to transport relief supplies to refugees entering the country from neighboring Afghanistan.
