This photo is a panoramic view from Kotohira Shrine at Minamiyamate of the southern tip of the foreign settlement and the Naminohira area. The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground. This is Nagasaki City viewed over Naminohira from Kotohira Shrine on the hill at the end of the Minamiyamate foreign settlement. Chintei Elementary School built in July 1887 at the border of the settlement in the open lot on the right didn’t exist yet. Small to medium sized shipyards are visible along the coast of Furukawa-machi and Naminohira-machi on the left. Downtown Nagasaki is viewed from the southern end of the Minamiyamate neighborhood. The building on the right is Jinjo Chintei Elementary School, renamed Jinjo Kozone Elementary School in July 1887. The Minamiyamate area of the foreign settlement stretches from the back of the school all the way up the hillside. The neighbourhoods on the left are Furukawa and Naminohira. The buildings in the centre are the Mitsubishi Tankosha and Nagasaki Flour Mill in Kozone-machi.
