According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was in the Aso region of Kumamoto Prefecture, at a depth of approximately 10 km. The quake is estimated to have had a magnitude of 5.7. A video shows overhead wires shaking at Kumamoto Station right after the earthquake.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that on Monday, January 13, at around 21:19, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Hyuga-nada Sea off the coast of Kyushu Island, southwestern Japan, at a depth of 18.6 miles (30 kilometers). A tsunami advisory was also issued for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures. A tsunami of approximately 20 cm was observed.
