On Sept. 9, 2014, the agency released the official record of the 87-year life of Emperor Hirohito, posthumously known as Emperor Showa. The department spent 24 years compiling the 61-volume record.

TOKYO, Japan - The Imperial Household Agency's Archives and Mausolea Department located in the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo is seen in this undated photo. The annals of Emperor Showa (1901-1989), around 12,000 pages in length, will be opened to the public in mid-September. Compiled by the department, they took about 24 years to complete.

TOKYO, Japan - Imperial Household Agency chief Toshio Yuasa signs the imperial family registry Dec. 10 in which Princess Aiko, the newborn daughter of Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako, was registered. The princess's name, and the names of her father and mother and the time, date and place of her birth were registered at the agency's Archives and Mausolea Department, located in the Imperial Palace grounds in Tokyo.
