The endangered bird is under class-one state protection in China. It is dubbed a "living fossil" as it has been living on the planet for over 10 million years. The bird is very picky about their living environment and is seen as an indicator species of wetlands' ecological health. To better protect the duck, Hunchun City launched a protection project.
