The street with the western-style buildings in the foreground used to be where foreigners used to go out to drink. Three buildings behind Confucius Shrine to the right have been recently restored ‘Seven Western Houses of Higashiyamate.’ The pink western style building in the upper right is Higashiyama Gakuin (the former British Consulate), the white building above it is Kaisei School. The entrance to the Belle Vue Hotel (site of present-ANA Hotel Gloverhill) in the Oura foreign settlement. This hotel, which opened in 1863, is one of the oldest in Japan. The photograph was taken in the mid-Meiji Period. Foreigners were the main guests because of its location. The Glover residence and the garden at Minamiyamate No. 1. The house was built in 1863 and was the residence of Thomas Glover who came to Nagasaki in 1861 as a representative of Jardine, Matheson & Company. It is the oldest western-style building in Japan. The garden is well maintained.
