Photos of WWII Japanese soldiers

Photo taken on July 28, 2024, at Misaka shrine in the western Japan city of Yamaguchi. During World War II, photos of Japanese soldiers were sent to the shrine by family members as it was believed that doing so would help the photographed person dodge bullets and survive. The shrine has been trying to return the photos to the families since the end of the war but about 14,000 photos still remain.

The city of Kofu

The city of Kofu

The city of Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, seen from Kofu Castle, facing south. The Western-style buildings in the foreground are part of a winery constructed in 1876 in the metal-casting foundry, part of an industrial complex established in Kofu Castle by then-governor Fujimura Shiro. Consequently, the date of the photograph is assumed to be the early Meiji Period. Visible in the background are Sone Hill and Mt. Misaka, located at the southern edge of the Kofu Basin. Mt. Fuji is also visible on the far left.==Date:unknown, Place:Kofu, Photo:A. Farsari, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number82‐46‐0]

A view of a village in the mountains

The Kamakura Highway (Misakaji) connecting the Kofu Basin in the south with Shizuoka is an old road dating back to ancient times. This photograph depicts the village of Fujinoki (present-day Misaka-machi, Fuefuki, Yamanashi Prefecture). Fujinoki was a tenma-shuku (a post town where travelers changed horses) on the Kofu Basin side, leading to the Misaka Pass of the Kamakura Highway. Misaka Pass is in the left background, viewed looking south from the Kofu Basin side. Nothing is known about the stone statue visible in the lower left.==Date:unknown, Place:Yamanashi, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number59‐28‐0]
