He was 59. Niimi, a Nagoya native, led a five-year court battle against major Japanese construction firm Kajima Corp. through November 2000 over a 60.5 million yen damages suit filed by 11 of the survivors.

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows Tomomitsu Niimi, a senior member of the AUM Shinrikyo, who was sentenced to death at the Tokyo District Court on June 26 for his involvement in a series of murders committed by the cult, including the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system. 3 killed in Okayama head-on collision

OKAYAMA, Japan - A man, his mother and aunt are killed Oct. 11 when the station wagon (L) they were riding in collided head-on with a large truck (R) in Niimi, Okayama Prefecture, police said. Killed in the 11 a.m. collision inside the Ohara Tunnel were Hiroshi Saeki, 50, his 78-year-old mother, Haruyo, and his 80-year-old aunt, Tamayo Yumba, police said. Tadataka Suzuki, the truck's 58-year-old driver, suffered minor injuries to his legs, police said.
