TOKYO, Japan - The Nijubashi Bridge, the main entrance bridge to the Imperial Palace grounds, is illuminated with light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs during a trial on Dec. 18, 2014. The palace will be illuminated from Dec. 23, the emperor's birthday, until Jan. 4.

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a 10,000-yen gold coin that Japan will issue later this year to mark the 20th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's enthronement. The front side of the pure-gold coin (top) depicts a phoenix and the Imperial Palace's ''Nijubashi'' double-arched bridge and the reverse side (bottom) depicts the chrysanthemum seal. A 500-yen nickel-brass coins will also be issued.

The stone bridge of the Imperial Palace popularly called Meganebashi (spectacles bridge ). Over the bridge can be seen the Fushimi turret. The so-called Nijubashi is not this bridge but the steel bridge at the front gate where the Fushimi turret stands.
