Coins marking 20th anniversary of Emperor's enthronement

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a 10,000-yen gold coin that Japan will issue later this year to mark the 20th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's enthronement. The front side of the pure-gold coin (top) depicts a phoenix and the Imperial Palace's ''Nijubashi'' double-arched bridge and the reverse side (bottom) depicts the chrysanthemum seal. A 500-yen nickel-brass coins will also be issued. (Kyodo)

Tanaka Kikinzoku unveils 2008 calendar made of pure gold

TOKYO, Japan - A model points out a calendar for 2008 made of pure gold at the flagship store of Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry K.K. in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district on Oct. 18. Tanaka Kikinzoku will begin taking orders for the 30 million yen calendar on Oct. 19. On the back of the calendar are printed images from the picture scroll of the Tale of Genji, a classic work of Japanese literature which will be marking its 1,000th anniversary next year. (Kyodo)

Japan to issue centenary coin for migration to Brazil

TOKYO, Japan - The Finance Ministry said on April 17 that it will issue a 5,00 yen commemorative coin (photo) around next March to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of migration of Japanese to Brazil in 1908. The coin's face has a design featuring a Japanese family of three who migrated to Brazil and the reverse side a design of cherry blossoms and coffee beans. (Kyodo)

TOKYO, Japan - Some 3,000 Viennese gold coins arranged in the shape of a cake are shown at Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry K.K.'s store in Tokyo's Ginza district on Feb. 28. Commemorative coins for emperor's reign to be issued

OSAKA, Japan - The Finance Ministry's Mint Bureau announces Nov. 1 it will accept mail orders from Nov. 8 to 21 for 100,000 sets each containing a 10,000 yen gold coin and 500 yen nickel coin (in the photo). The coins commemorate the 10th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's reign. Also to be issued will be 100,000 sets each containing the 10,000 yen gold coin.

Gold coin to be issued to celebrate emperor's enthronement

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows both sides of the 10,000-yen gold coin to be issued to celebrate Emperor Akihito's 10th anniversary of enthronement. One side of the coin, 20 grams in weight and 28 millimeters in diameter, is a design of a Phoenix, and the other side is a chrysanthemum, the emblem of the imperial family. Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazwa on July 13 announced details of the issuance in November. The government will issue 200,000 gold coins and 15 million 500-yen nickel coins.

Princess Diana memorial coin on sale in Japan

The sale of coins commemorating Britain's late Princess Diana starts in Japan on Jan. 9. Minted by the British government, the 5 pound coin is made of nickel, features side facial profiles of Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II on alternate side. The coin comes with a holder featuring a photograph of the princess smiling. A set of the coin in the holder is priced at 3,500 yen. ==Kyodo
