Apparently a copy of a picture postcard, this photograph captures the southwestern side of the dungeon seen from Nishinomaru area. The black stone wall visible at the lower left is the wall of Ofukemaru, and the white stone wall connects Ofukemaru and Ninomaru. The right side of the main castle tower is connected to the small tower. The photograph is entitled (in English), Medieval moated castle of Japanese Princes, occasionally used by the Mikado. Nagoya, Japan . This is probably Shimo Ofuke Garden in Ofukemaru, located in the northern part of the Honmaru and Ninomaru areas of Nagoya Castle. This garden is said to have represented a sort of fairyland or utopia, consisting of 14 islands, big and small, such as Matsubara-jima and Takefuji-jima in a huge lotus pond. In 1889, it was purchased by the Department of the Army and turned into a military drill field. In 1908, part of the Ofukemaru area became an imperial villa. A bronze statue

A bronze statue

This is the statue of Ii Naosuke in ceremonial dress. Ii signed the five amity and commerce treaties with the U.S.A. and other countries in 1858 but was later assassinated in Tokyo. The copper statue was made by Fujita Bunzo and Okazaki Sessei and placed at Shokonsha in Hikone in 1910. The original statue shown in this photograph was donated to the country for scrap metal during World War II.
