U.S. eyed bases throughout main island of Okinawa

WASHINGTON, United States - Photo shows a map of Okinawa with proposed major U.S. military facilities, created by the U.S. Army in October 1946, that has been discovered at the U.S. National Archives. Declassified U.S. documents show that the U.S. military was planning from 1945 to 1946 to use the entire area of the main island of Okinawa for permanent bases.

A diplomat turned politician who served as Japan's second postwar prime minister from October 1945 to May 1946. Shidehara became foreign minister twice before World War II (1924-27, 1929-31). The so-called Shidehara diplomacy of 1920s was characterized as its advocacy of international cooperation and a conciliatory attitude toward China. Born Aug. 11, 1872 and died March 10, 1951.

TOKYO, Japan - This is a file photo of an English class in Tokyo by Elizabeth Vining in July 1947, with then Crown Prince Akihito (second from the back on left) in the class. Vining died at a nursing home in Philadelphia on Nov. 27. She was 97. During her tenure in Japan from October 1946 to December 1950, Vining, a native of Philadelphia, taught English to the teenage crown prince and other members of the imperial family.
