Freighter stranded on Izu-Oshima Island catches fire

TOKYO, Japan - Black smoke spews from the stranded 56,835-ton freighter Hual Europe on Izu-Ohima Island after a fire broke out on the ship early Nov. 26. The Norwegian-owned Bahamas-registered freighter, carrying some 4,000 automobiles, ran aground on the island on Oct. 1 during a typhoon.

The suit, filed in 1995, drew public attention because four of the plaintiffs were listed as an Amami rabbit, a jay, a thrush and an Amami woodcock. The animal names on the official documents were followed by ''known as'' and the plaintiffs' names.
