AOMORI, Japan - A ship carrying a cargo of high-level radioactive waste, produced through reprocessing of spent Japanese nuclear fuel in Britain, arrives at a port in Aomori Prefecture for storage on Feb. 27, 2013. It was carrying highly radioactive nuclear waste reprocessed in France from spent nuclear fuel removed from nuclear reactors in Japan. The waste will be stored at a Rokkasho storage facility for 30-50 years.

The cargo comprising eight containers of 192 vitrified blocks has been reprocessed by French nuclear fuel company COGEMA and is to be delivered to a storage facility in the village.

TOMIOKA, Japan - About 13 tons of spent nuclear fuel are taken aboard the 4,913-ton Rokuei Maru in Fukushima Prefecture on Dec. 17 to be carried to Aomori Prefecture to be reprocessed in the first shipment of its kind in Japan. The ship picked up the spent nuclear fuel stored in a reactor at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 2 plant. The ship will carry a total of 24 tons of such fuel to Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, where the cargo will be off-loaded to await reprocessing.

A vessel containing nuclear waste in the form of 40 rods of vitrified blocks is unloaded from the 5,000-ton British ship Pacific Swan, which arrived at Mutsu-Ogawara port in the village of Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, some 700 kilometers north of Tokyo, on April 15. The high-level radioactive waste was reprocessed in France.
