Huge plumes of smoke were visible from flights arriving and departing from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as a wildfire rapidly spread through Pacific Palisades fueled by Santa Ana winds on Tuesday, January 7. The fire has scorched more than 2,900 acres, prompting the evacuation of nearly 30,000 residents and causing several road closures. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency to provide additional support to the affected communities.

OSAKA, Japan - Photo provided by the Minami-Chita Beach Land, an aquarium in Aichi Prefecture, shows a green turtle with a transmitter attached to its shell being released into the sea Oct. 17, 1999. The giant female turtle, born on Chichijima Island south of Tokyo in 1982 and raised at the aquarium, was returned to the wild in 1999 to study the ability of animals to adapt to nature after being raised by humans. Aquarium researchers recently announced the turtle had been able to successfully adapt to its new environment.
