Shinobazu Pond was constructed by the priest Tenkai when he built Kaneiji Temple in 1625, imitating the shape of Lake Biwa with a Bentendo in Chikubushima. The photo taken from around the middle of the approach towards the edge of the pond. To the right behind the pine trees stands the roof of the left edge of the Bentensha. This photograph was taken at the same location as #3954. However, the work on the park seems to have progressed as the stone wall is complete and the slope has been turned into stairs. Shinobazu Pond is visible in the background, but the land is reclaimed around the pond. This photograph taken half way along the approach to Nakanoshima, the same location as in #4665. However, the length of the pine branches indicates that this photograph was taken later. The teahouse was built on a protruding point of Nakanoshima. Nakanoshima is an artificial islands in Shinobazu Pond built by Mizutani Isenokami Katsutaka using a small existing island and enlarging it with soil from a hill in Ueno. The Buddhist priest Tenkai built Benten-do to worship Benzaiten of Chikubushima at Lake Biwa, and it was visited by many people over the years. This is a teahouse on the east bank of Shinobazu Pond. Most of the customers were people coming to see the cherry blossoms, and many writers and artists also frequented the teahouses. A rickshaw is parked at the right side of the photograph and next to it stands an electric lamp, giving a sense of the period. Deai-jaya (teahouses for dating) lined the approach to Nakanoshima until 1877. The circumference of Shinobazu Pond was filled in in 1868. The fact that this work is yet to be completed in this photograph indicates that it was taken before that year. The horse race track was built at Ueno Park in 1884 by filling in the area surrounding Shinobazu Pond. The left side of the fence next to the cherry trees is a one mile stretch. Horse racing was conducted not for gambling but for sheer entertainment. It is said that the Emperor's Cup started at this race track. Benten-do on Nakanoshima and the path to it are seen at Shinobazu Pond. The Buddhist priest Tenkai modeled the pond after Lake Biwa and built the shrine to worship the deity Benzaiten of Chikubushima. The stone bridge was built between 1789 and 1801. Lake Shinobazu had a Bentendo on Chikubu Island which was built by the priest Tenkai, forming a miniature of Lake Biwa, when he built Kanei Temple in the second year of Kanei (1625). Mt. Ueno provides a bird's eye view from the Kiyomizuzaka. There are tea houses along the approach. Further on, there is a Bentendo in the center, with the Kijiin to the right. A photo before Mt. TOKYO, Japan - Waterfowl walk on the frozen Shinobazu Pond in Tokyo's Ueno Park on the morning of Jan. 28 as central Tokyo experienced its coldest spell this winter. The temperature fell below zero for the first time this winter, to minus 0.7 C at 6:22 a.m.
