Qomolangma STORYLINE: A Chinese climber on Thursday successfully glided off Mt. Qomolangma from the South Col to the base camp area from the Nepali side. Li Shengtao flew his solo unpowered paraglider at an altitude of 8,000 meters from the South Col at 09:14 local time and landed at 09:38 at the designated area around the base camp at an altitude of 5,400 meters, according to the five-member Chinese team. Li's flying expedition was permitted by the Nepali government and he became the first Chinese to glide off Mt. Qomolangma from the South Col. A record high of 478 climbers from 65 countries and regions have received permits to climb the peak from the Nepali side during the spring climbing season, according to Nepal's Department of Tourism.
