SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): JIANG PENG, Chief engineer of the FAST STORYLINE: China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, has identified more than 900 new pulsars since its launch in 2016, its operator said Wednesday. Pulsars, or fast-spinning neutron stars, originate from the imploded cores of massive dying stars through supernova explosions. Pulsar observation is an important task for FAST, which can be used to confirm the existence of gravitational radia

Webb Reveals New Structures Within Iconic Supernova

Webb Reveals New Structures Within Iconic Supernova

Handout - Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) captured this detailed image of SN 1987A (Supernova 1987A). At the center, material ejected from the supernova forms a keyhole shape. Just to its left and right are faint crescents newly discovered by Webb. Beyond them an equatorial ring, formed from material ejected tens of thousands of years before the supernova explosion, contains bright hot spots. Exterior to that is diffuse emission and two faint outer rings. This image reveals a central structure like a keyhole. This center is packed with clumpy gas and dust ejected by the supernova explosion. The dust is so dense that even near-infrared light that Webb detects can’t penetrate it, shaping the dark “hole” in the keyhole. Despite the decades of study since the supernova’s initial discovery, there are several mysteries that remain, particularly surrounding the neutron star that should have been formed in the aftermath of the supernova explosion. Galactic Island Of Tranquillity

Galactic Island Of Tranquillity

Handout photo shows The tranquil spiral galaxy UGC 12295 basks leisurely in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. This galaxy lies around 192 million light-years away in the constellation Pisces, and is almost face-on when viewed from Earth, displaying a bright central bar and tightly wound spiral arms. Despite appearing as an island of tranquillity in this image, UGC 12295 played host to a catastrophically violent explosion - a supernova - that was first detected in 2015. This supernova prompted two different teams of astronomers to propose Hubble observations of UGC 12295 that would sift through the wreckage of this vast stellar explosion. Supernovae are the explosive deaths of massive stars, and are responsible for forging many of the elements found here on Earth. The first team of astronomers used Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) to examine the detritus left behind by the supernova in order to better understand the evolution of matter in our Universe.  The second team of astronomers also

China's FAST telescope detects record-breaking binary pulsar

STORY: China's FAST telescope detects record-breaking binary pulsar DATELINE: June 23, 2023 LENGTH: 00:01:29 LOCATION: GUIYANG, China CATEGORY: TECHNOLOGY SHOTLIST: 1. various of China's FAST telescope 2. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LU JIGUANG, Assistant researcher, National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) STORYLINE: China's FAST telescope identified a binary pulsar with an orbital period of 53.3 minutes, the shortest known period for a pulsar binary system. The research, mainly conducted by a team led by scientists from the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC), was published in the journal Nature Wednesday. Pulsars, or fast-spinning neutron stars, originate from the imploded cores of massive dying stars through supernova explosions. The newly detected binary pulsar is named PSR J1953+1844 (M71E). It belongs to the spider pulsar system with the largest orbiting angular velocity so far. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LU JIGUANG, Assistant rese

SOUNDBITE (Chinese): JIANG PENG, Chief engineer of FAST "The FAST telescope provides us an important opportunity in finding some unique pulsars for producing premises for significant scientific results." Pulsars, or fast-spinning neutron stars, originate from the imploded cores of massive dying stars through supernova explosions. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): JIANG PENG, Chief engineer of FAST STORYLINE: Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), or the "China Sky Eye," scientists have identified over 660 new pulsars. Pulsars, or fast-spinning neutron stars, originate from the imploded cores of massive dying stars through supernova explosions. With their high density and fast rotation, they are an ideal laboratory for studying the laws of physics in extreme environments. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): JIANG PENG, Chief engineer of FAST "The development of FAST has entered a golden period, and the stable operation of observation equipment has made a great contribution to this. Adequate observation time and outstanding signal capture ability have allowed FAST to perform better than other radio telescopes." Located in
