Mitsubishi Motors releases new electric vehicle

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Motors Corp. unveils a test car of new electric vehicles featuring motors housed in wheels and long-lasting batteries at a press conference in Tokyo on May 11. The company said it aims to commercialize them by 2010. Unlike conventional electric vehicles, which have motors on the chassis, the Colt EV's in-wheel motors make it possible to regulate drive torque and braking force independently at each wheel without any transmission or other complex mechanical components, Mitsubishi Motors said.

Honda devises system to realize optimum torque distribution

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows the core portion of a new system developed by Honda Motor Co. to determine the optimum front-rear and left-right torque distribution for outstanding vehicle stability by monitoring driver input and driving conditions. Honda said April 1 the Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system combines front-rear torque distribution control with independently regulated torque distribution to the left and right rear wheels to freely distribute the optimum amount of torque to all four wheels in accordance with driving conditions.

Piezo Sonic (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo) has released a high-torque ultrasonic motor, the PSM60N. The ultrasonic motor rotates by minute vibrations and frictional force. Since it does not use coils and magnets, it can be used in high magnetic field environments such as magnetic resonance tomography (MRI) systems.The company's ultrasonic motor uses a piezoelectric element to vibrate a ring with a comb-shaped slit. When the rotor (rotating body) is brought into contact with the ring, the vibration of the teeth is transmitted to the rotor, which rotates. The comb tooth structure amplifies the vibration. We chose a material with high friction to increase the torque. The maximum torque is 1.2 Newton meters, which is 5 to 10 times higher than a DC motor of the same size. Honda devises fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine for Civic

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. said July 5 it has developed a new 1.8-liter engine (in photo) which is one of the most fuel-efficient engines of its class in the world. The 1.8/i-VTEC engine will be mounted in the new Civic passenger car model Honda will put on the market this fall. The engine is based on Honda's intelligent VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during ignition and acceleration to achieve a powerful torque, and then delays intake valve closure during cruising and other low-load conditions for improved fuel economy, the automaker said.
