University of Electro-Communications and Obayashi Corporation's diagnostic device for correcting blurred images

Associate Professor Norihiro Koizumi of the University of Electro-Communications and Obayashi Corporation (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo) have developed a device that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic technology to correct blurring caused by the movement of organs and assist in taking clear images using ultrasound. It is expected that Obayashi Corporation will start selling this device in April 2022 at a price of tens of millions of yen, for use as a supplement to ultrasound diagnostic equipment. In the future, it is envisioned that cancer treatment using radiation or heavy particle beams will be carried out while observing in real time. It is expected that by obtaining images that pinpoint the location of organs, the beam can be accurately irradiated to the affected area. Kyocera's ultrasonic transducers

Kyocera's ultrasonic transducers

Kyocera has begun development of a compact, high-power focused ultrasound transducer (transducer). It is a piezoelectric device that uses Kyocera's inkjet head technology and is expected to be used mainly for cauterizing cancer cells. The company has produced a demonstration device that shows how ultrasonic waves are focused, and has started market research and application development. Since the ultrasonic waves are focused by multiple unit devices, research and development is being conducted to minimize variations in precision and characteristics so that each device does not vary and the ultrasonic waves are at the frequency where they reach their maximum. We are also considering scaling up by increasing the number of devices. In addition to the cauterization of cancer cells, the company is also considering the use of ultrasonic sensors to develop new applications. Honda Electronics' ultrasonic microscope for cells

Honda Electronics' ultrasonic microscope for cells

Honda Electronics and Prof. Naohiro Hozumi of Toyohashi University of Technology have developed an ultrasonic microscope that can observe the state of cultured cells as a continuous tomogram, and will build a prototype for commercialization by December, followed by evaluation of the microscope at Hamamatsu University of Medicine. They aim to commercialize the microscope within four years after the evaluation. The aim is to use the microscope in regenerative medicine and drug discovery. The developed ultrasound microscope for cell observation incorporates software for acoustic analysis method developed at Toyohashi University of Technology. By using the acoustic analysis method, it is possible to view the fault information of living cells without touching the cell culture medium.
