OTSU, Japan - A group of residents in Toyosato, Shiga Prefecture, celebrate the success of their suit against Toyosato Mayor Wasaburo Ono on Dec. 22. The Otsu District Court ordered Ono to stop funding construction of a new school building to replace the 66-year-old art deco building designed by U.S. architect William Merrell Vories that the mayor had sought to demolish. The residents want the building preserved.

OTSU, Japan - Police search the historic Toyosato Elementary School building in the town of Toyosato in Shiga Prefecture on Dec. 25 after receiving a complaint from local residents that the town mayor attempted to demolish the school in violation of a court order.
