Ochanomizu Bridge and Nikolai-do, both built in 1891, viewed from Juntendo Hospital. On the left (north) and right side of the artificial Kanda River are Yushima-dai and Suruga-dai, respectively. Ochanomizu Bridge was the first bridge constructed to provide access to the elevated land, which had been built for the protection of Edo. Even though the river was artificial, this area was renowned for its scenic beauty, and visitors enjoyed fireflies and Japanese cuckoos. The stairs on the right lead to Ueno Park from Ueno Square. The hill above the stairs was called Sakuragaoka. A Confucian Shrine (later moved to Yushima) was built there in 1630 by Hayashi Razan. The famous statue of Saigo Takamori by Takamura Koun was erected here in 1897. The roof to the left of the stairs is Ueno Kiyomizu-do, built by the priest Tenkai. The Kuromon (Black Gate) was stood formerly on the site at the left edge of the photograph. Yushima shoheiko

The Seido was moved from Shinobuoka to Yushima (Shoheizaka) in 1692 by the will of the 5th Shogun Ietsuna. The Shoheiko was also opened and was made the ultimate school for Confucian studies. It was taken over by the new government in 1868, and was called Shohei Gakko and Daigakko. It was closed in 1872. The white walled house in the center is where Ueno Hikoma lived and had his photo studio. The new two-storied photo studio Ueno Hikoma built in 1872 can be seen. The big gate on the left is the main gate of Nagasaki Seido, along with Yushima in Tokyo and Taku in Saga, one of the three foremost academic centers of Confucianism in Japan at that time.
