Torii with snow. A woman stands at the left pillar looking toward the camera. This bronze torii was built in 1667 at the entrance of the Tenjin and was repaired in 1671. It is unusual in design, with a Chinese lion carving at the foot of the pillar.         An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.           The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.
