Scholar devises catechin-based anti-flue mask

OSAKA, Japan - Associate professor Kunihiro Kaihatsu of Osaka Sangyo University announces on Oct. 26, 2014, the development of an anti-influenza mask containing a derivative of catechin, a major green tea component known to have antibacterial effects.

Copper fiber sheet commercialized by Good Eye

Good Eye (Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture) will release GUD Sheet, a copper fiber sheet with antibacterial and antiviral effects, in June. The company commercialized four types of masks, including one priced at 4,980 yen (excluding consumption tax). The GUD sheet is a polymer fiber covered with copper foil and coated with a visible light responsive photocatalyst. In an experiment on bacteriophage, a virus that infects bacteria, it was confirmed that rubbing a finger covered with the virus on the sheet for 30 seconds reduced the number of the virus to less than 1/1000.Professor Hideyuki Itabashi of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Gunma University, who also serves as the company's chairman, said, "We hope to start experiments in July. Antibacterial sand on sale

GIFU, Japan - A worker at a cooperative lumber association in the village of Miya, Gifu Prefecture, watches antibacterial agents being glazed onto specially processed sand. The Carbo-tec Hida association said Jan. 7 it has started selling antibacterial sand produced in this method for use in kindergarten sand pits and golf courses as a hygienic measure against dog and cat dung.
