Opens Okinawa Ocean Expo

The Okinawa International Ocean Expo is held for 183 days to commemorate Okinawa's return to mainland Japan. Aqua-polis, the main symbol of the Okinawa International Marine Exposition, was completed at the Hiroshima Shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and a naming ceremony was held at Aqua-polis' Aqua Hall on April 17 with about 200 people in attendance. Falling number of visitors and ensuing financial difficulties will force Aquapark Co., the operator of Aquapolis, to transfer management of the facility to a joint venture set up by companies from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan, company officials say July 5. The three-story, half-underwater facility, built in 1975, was the main attraction for an international marine exposition.
