MATSUYAMA, Japan - A seven-meter-long whale is seen beached in Onishi, Ehime Prefecture, on Jan 12. Town and local coast guard officials, and firefighters joined hands in rescuing the whale. NAKATANE, Japan - At least 171 whales are found beached on Tanegashima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on March 10, but many have been returned to sea by locals and surfers. Kagoshima City Aquarium staff said what appeared to be melon-headed whales were found on the western side of the island, which lies off the southern tip of mainland Kagoshima Prefecture.

A team of whale experts confirmed the 16-meter male sperm whale's heart stopped beating at 2:18 p.m.
