TOKYO, Japan - Yamamotoyama, a juryo-division sumo wrestler, has broken the weight record of Japanese sumo wrestlers, tipping the scale at 251.5 kilograms during a physical checkup at the Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo arena in Tokyo on Aug. 22, according to the Japan Sumo Association. The previous record was held by Susanoumi, who weighed 240 kg during the physicals prior to the summer grand tournament in 1998. The heaviest sumo wrestler on record is Konishiki from Hawaii at 284 kg.

TOKYO, Japan - Crown Prince Naruhito (file photo) has been found to have a benign duodenal polyp, the Imperial Household Agency said March 30. An endoscopic surgery will be conducted at some point to remove the polyp, which was discovered when the prince and his wife, Princess Masako, underwent a periodic medical checkup March 24 and was diagnosed as being benign and not large, the agency said.

TOKYO, Japan - Prince Tomohito of Mikasa (in file photo), a cousin of Emperor Akihito, developed cancer in the throat and will undergo a surgery on Feb. 29 at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo, the Imperial Household Agency said on Feb. 14. The 60-year-old prince was diagnosed as early cancer after signs of cancer in the oropharynx were found during a regular checkup held Feb. 7 at the center, the agency said.
