MULBERRY HARBOUR WAS BUILT TO SUPPLY THE ALLIED ARMIES IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING THE NORMANDY LANDINGS. IN FACT, TWO PORTS WERE ASSEMBLED OFF THE BEACHES OF CALVADOS, BUT ONLY THE ONE AT ARROMANCHES WAS TO BECOME OPERATIONAL, THE SECOND OFF OMAHA BEACH BEING DESTROYED BY A STORM ON 19 JUNE 1944. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS PORT MEANT THAT THE ALLIES DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE A DEEP-WATER PORT DIRECTLY. MULBERRY HARBOUR WAS MADE UP OF SEVERAL LARGE ELEMENTS PREFABRICATED IN ENGLAND, TRANSPORTED AND ASSEMBLED ON THE NORMANDY COAST. THIS ARTIFICIAL PORT HAS OFTEN BEEN CREDITED WITH THE SUCCESS OF THE BATTLE OF NORMANDY AND PRESENTED AS AN EXAMPLE OF LOGISTICAL AND MILITARY GENIUS. The exhibit honors some 80 diplomats from more than 20 countries who saved hundreds of thousands of Jews from Nazi persecution during World War II by issuing them visas.
