'Black, White Croquettes' win fans in Toyama Pref.

TOYAMA, Japan - "Black Croquette" (L) seasoned with soy sauce, black pepper and squid ink, and bite-size "White Croquette" (R) featuring the unique taste of shredded kombu, or edible kelp, are a big hit in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. The two types of croquettes, as pictured in December 2013, were developed by food consulting company DQ Solution to promote local Toyama tastes and won the grand prize at the 1st All Japan Croquette Festival in November 2013.

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows the seven different products of Aqlifoods Co., a subsidiary of Maruha Nichiro Holdings Inc., in which malathion, an organic phosphate typically used as a pesticide, was detected. Aqlifoods said Dec. 31, 2013, that pesticide residue found in some of its frozen food products could sicken a child who consumed just one-eighth of a croquette, dramatically revising its previous estimate of 60 croquettes comprising a toxic dose. The packet at top left is the same product as the croquette package in which the highest concentration was detected.

SAPPORO, Japan - Frozen croquettes made from ''ground beef'' supplied by Meat Hope Co., a meat-processing company based in Hokkaido, were found to have been mixed with pork and chicken. Some of the ''beef croquettes'' (as labeled in the photo) were found to contain only pork, according to DNA tests conducted by frozen food maker Katokichi Co. and the Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union. Police searched the premises of Meat Hope on June 24 on suspicion of violating the unfair competition prevention law.
