Altar at Sanjusangendo Temple

Altar at Sanjusangendo Temple

The prayer hall at Rengeo-in Main Temple (Sanjusangendo). The seated figure in the centre is surrounded by statues of the 28 Followers of Kannon and flanked on both sides by the guardian statues of Fujin (Wind Deity) and Raijin (Thunder Deity). Made entirely of wood, the seated Senju Kannon is 3.35 meters tall and carved in the yosegi style, or joined-block construction method, with a hippaku or gold leaf finish. The eyes are made of crystal. The statue of Senju Kannon was completed in 1254 by Tankei and his apprentices, Koen and Kosei.==Date:unknown, Place:Kyoto, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number42‐18‐0]
