Altar at Sanjusangendo Temple

The prayer hall at Rengeo-in Main Temple (Sanjusangendo). The seated figure in the centre is surrounded by statues of the 28 Followers of Kannon and flanked on both sides by the guardian statues of Fujin (Wind Deity) and Raijin (Thunder Deity). Made entirely of wood, the seated Senju Kannon is 3.35 meters tall and carved in the yosegi style, or joined-block construction method, with a hippaku or gold leaf finish. The eyes are made of crystal.     The Nio Gate of Kiyomizu Temple. There are stone lanterns on both the north and the south sides of the stone stairway in front of the gate. The west gate and the three-story pagoda are visible on the far right. Built during the Muromachi Era (1392-1573), the Nio Gate had three rooms and one door with a hiwadabuki (bark-covered) roof. A total of 1001 Senju Kannon (thousand-armed deity of mercy statues) surround, in rows of 10 by 50, the statue of seated Kannon in the centre. Taken by Tamamura Kozaburo.
