Public lavatory in Tokyo's Shibuya

File photo taken on May 28, 2023, shows a public lavatory designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward that featured in the movie "Perfect Days" directed by Wim Wenders of Germany. Japanese actor Koji Yakusho was named Best Actor at this year's Cannes film festival for his role as the lavatory's janitor in the film.

Glass-walled public loo in Oita

OITA, Japan - Photo shows a public lavatory with a large glass window built in a shopping street in Oita, southwestern Japan, in March 2014. The glass window turns opaque when a person enters and becomes clear when the installed motion sensor does not detect any motion in the room for 35 seconds. There has already been an incident in which the glass turned clear while someone using the room did not move for over 35 seconds.

FUKUOKA, Japan - A citizens' group presents what it claims is the first bathroom for guide dogs on a walking path in the city of Fukuoka in southwestern Japan on Nov. 21. A recording gives instructions to the 10 million yen lavatory when a person approaches.

Biodegrading toilets to be set up on Mt. Fuji summit

SHIZUOKA, Japan - Photo shows biodegrading lavatories which a Shizuoka-based nonprofit organization commissioned to protect the environment on Mt. Fuji. The lavatories will be installed at the mountain's summit in late June to decompose human waste. Officials of the nonprofit Fujisan Club said May 23 that they installed a biodegrading lavatory at the mountain's fifth station last year.

6 arrested in Japan for gold smuggling
