Freedom Flotilla Ready To Set Sail For Gaza - Istanbul

Doctor Yvonne Ridley, an independent Scottish candidate for the next general elections in Britain, poses for a photo on the AK Deniz ship in Istanbul, on April 23, 2024 . ‘Yesterday we had a delegation of 25 from Algeria, including an MP, and today we’ve got as Spanish MP. So we have elected officials who are showing some back bone, which is more than what Biden, or Rishi Sunak or the Germans are doing. It’s encouraging because it means that they’re still a few politicians of integrity. And then the rest of us are activists, and people like myself who fought for decades to get justice and freedom for the Palestinians. We are just deeply ashamed about what’s happening at the moment, and I don’t know if the Global South will ever forgive us. The world order is just upside down. We can see clearly that there’s a famine in Gaza, we can see quite clearly from the shallow graves that have been dug up under Al Hassa hospital and Al-Shifa hospital that people were executed in cold blood. And it’s people who were stil

Yotam, 30, is a social worker, a law student, and a training coordinator for an association that works to promote equal rights for Palestinians in Jerusalem. During Israel’s 2014 war on Gaza, he was a combat soldier. He describes a dual experience where on the one hand he explicitly condemns the war, and on the other hand, feels the need to be sensitive in situations that are incompatible with this belief. Friends he loves are fighting in Gaza, which he opposes. “However, every time they returned home in the past months, it was clear to me that first thing, I am going to see them. As someone who was a combat soldier in the Israeli military during Tzuk Eitan [Operation “Protective Edge”], for the sake of my mental health, I require myself to cut back in most situations, and only if invited to speak, will I do so”. Shih Han on the roof top of the building where his family lives, New Taipei City, Taiwan, 2019 ‘I feel very proud that Taiwan just became the first Asian country to legalize same sex marriage, and I really believe it’s just the first step. Now we have to let more and more people know that we have the same rights as heterosexual people. Education is the priority.  I get discriminated by gay men because of this expectation that we should be muscular with short hair, as to compensate for something. I’m sick of this. Some patriarcal gay men asked me why I had long hair, thinking I was giving gay men a bad name by looking different. They think it’s adding an extra layer of misunderstanding for the society. They believe I’m not a good gay man. But why should I follow the rules? I just want to be myself.’ Shih Han Shih Han is a performing artist. He lives with his family in New Taipei City. I'm always too A for B, too B for C etc. I've been very lucky to create my own communities and spaces with other queerdos and freax who exist in the same liminal ways that I do. These days I find my identity as a butch dyke to be the most prominent way that I connect to people, and the closest thing to a core description of who and what I am.
