Rare okapi makes public debut at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo

TOKYO, Japan - Kimbia the okapi, a rare animal from Africa, makes her public debut June 13 at Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo. The 4-year-old Kimbia is on loan to Ueno Zoo from San Diego Zoo in the United States and arrived in Japan on June 6.

A rarely seen okapi, a member of the giraffe family, runs around March 25 at Zoorasia, a new zoo to open April 24 in Yokohama. It is the first time for the animal from tropical rain forests to be seen in Japan. The zoo will have 315 animals from 59 species, including the rare Indian lion.
