Mitsubishi Heavy develops reusable 'shape-memory' screw

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said June 26 it has developed a ''shape-memory'' reusable polymer screw that becomes smooth when heated, allowing it to be easily removed from household electric appliances for recycling. The top photo shows a screw made of the polymer in its standard shape, and the bottom photo shows the screw after it has been heated to 120 C, causing the thread to be absorbed into the screw for easy removal. Once the screw has cooled down, it reassumes its original shape.

SOUNDBITE (Chinese): AIKYN MAMERHAN STORYLINE: SOUNDBITE (Chinese): AIKYN MAMERHAN "My name is Aikyn Mamerhan. I'm in charge of an embroidery cooperative in Shihezi Village. We specialize in producing ethnic Kazakh embroidery products. I have three daughters. The oldest one has taken a job after graduating from university. And this is the elder one of the twin sisters and this is the younger one. This is my wife. KAIWA's stainless steel vise for MC

KAIWA's stainless steel vise for MC

Kaiwa (Uenohara City, Yamanashi Prefecture) has launched a new stainless steel 5-direction centering vise for machining centers (MCs) that holds workpieces from four directions on both sides of the XY axis. It is suitable for ultra-precision machining of workpieces up to 50 mm in length and 60 mm in width using a 5-axis MC. The mouthpiece is interchangeable to suit the machining purpose. Even rectangular or round-shaped workpieces can be held securely. Both Y-axis and X-axis workpieces are fixed in the center position by separate screw tightening operations. "Mr. Yamazoe says, "The unique structure of the machine, which has no internal bearing mechanism, prevents rattling even after long-term use. The clamping jig of the optional vise has elasticity to soften the impact when the machining head and other parts collide. The vise is assembled from multiple parts. The external size is 120mm (length) x 110mm (width) x 90mm (height). Photo taken on November 1, 2019, credit: Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun / Kyodo News Images

Crawler-type mobile robot developed by NEDO and Tohoku University

Crawler-type mobile robot developed by NEDO and Tohoku University

A research group from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Tohoku University announced on the 26th that they have developed a crawler-type robot that can move continuously in all directions. It is expected to be used as a driving mechanism for moving objects such as electric wheelchairs and mobile navigation robots. In the past, "omni-wheels," which can move in all directions by combining three or more wheels, were developed, but these wheels had limitations in overcoming steps and could not move smoothly on soft surfaces due to their small footprint. The robot has a simple structure consisting of two motors required for omni-directional movement and a minimal power transmission system including screw gears, making it easy to maintain.
